After being harassed online for my novel THEY, a biblical tale of secret genders (published by Adelaide Books--New York and Lisbon--in 2018), I made a commitment to myself to keep getting the word out about THEY because the harassment said to me that the novel is still needed. A brief excerpt from the novel is posted below, and the text is posted below that. The excerpt is from the point of view of the narrator Tamar, who is present as her sister gives birth to twins, babies who are both born intersexed.
"It seems that I don't only have a nephew," Tamar said as Orpah turned toward her with the other infant. "I have a niece, too."
"What are you talking about?" asked Orpah.
"Look." Tamar held the infant in her arms and picked up the sex to show Orpah what she had found.
"Oh... well, that is not that unusual," said Orpah.
She took the first twin and handed Tamar the baby with the string around hir wrist.
"This is his brother, born second, but with the scarlet thread that I placed on his wrist. They
must have traded places in the womb," said Orpah.
"This one looks like a boy, too," replied Tamar, "but let's see." She picked up the tiny sex.
Underneath was an opening, just like the twin.
"A perfect set of genitals -- male and female -- on each child. It's a miracle," said Tamar.
A gentle rain played on the tent. The storm had passed.
"I have seen this before," said Orpah. "Usually, the opening is stitched up and the child is raised as a boy."
Both infants wailed.
