Cognitive Dissonance--thoughts and actions that don't agree #PlantBased #amreading
I wanted to post a paragraph from my recently published memoir, The Lens of Eternity: Queer Love from Two Pandemics, from Wipf and Stock Publishers. The paragraph is on the subject of cognitive dissonance from a vegan viewpoint. The memoir is about my life in 2020, quarantining with my partner. Despite the devastation of the pandemic, 2020 was an interesting year for us since it was the year we went to a plant-based, vegan diet. In the book, I document the health and ethical reasons. I also intertwine our lives with those of the historic photographer Berenice Abbott, who survived the 1918 pandemic, and her long-time partner. The paragraph on cognitive dissonance is recorded (below) for YouTube, and the text is pasted below that.
In “The Lens of Eternity,” Janet Mason explores enduring lesbian relationships, veganism, health, and living one’s truth as an artist and compassionate human being on this planet, by juxtaposing her and her partner’s lives during the pandemic with the lives of renowned photographer Berenice Abbott, who survived the 1918 pandemic, and her partner, writer Elizabeth McCausland. Readers will enjoy Mason’s humor and insights in this wise book.

Frannie and I joined an online vegan group after the pandemic. The moderator said that a lot of people who ate a traditional diet experienced “cognitive dissonance”—meaning their thoughts and actions didn’t agree. She explained that this cognitive dissonance could be triggered just by knowing the person they were talking to was vegan. An example of cognitive dissonance could be that the person really loved their pet, for example, and still ate meat (without thinking that their pet could have been another person’s meat). Another example could be someone who had a health condition (like diabetes) that they knew could be improved through a plant-based diet, but who was still eating food they knew made their condition worse.
