Giving voice to the voiceless: CINNAMON, a dairy cow's (and her farmer's) path to freedom #amreading #govegan

Today, I thought I'd post a short excerpt from my novel CINNAMON, a dairy cow's (and her farmer's) path to freedom. In talking to her best cow friend, Spacie, Cinnamon learns to speak up. It's important to remember that we all need to do this, especially when we are giving voice to the voiceless.

I really did not know what to say. But I did have one thing to say

about our previous conversation. In fact, I couldn’t help myself. I had

almost interjected this when she was talking but held my tongue.

“Older,” I corrected her.

“What?”

“Older not old. You said you heard this from an old cow. You should

have said ‘an older cow.’ We never get to be old here.”

Spice regarded me silently.

Once again, I had mentioned the unmentionable.

I looked back at her silently.

A long moment passed.

“Before you INTERRUPTED me, I was talking about the pecking

order,” emphasized Spice.

I widened my eyes in an attempt to look inquisitive.

Think about it,” she explained. “The cows in the front of the line are

rather bossy and peremptory.”

“That’s a pecking order?” I asked. “I thought that they were anxious

because they knew they were going away next and were behaving

strangely.”

Oops. I had mentioned the future again. I hadn’t meant to, but I

guess it was inevitable since we were talking about a concept that was

larger than just trading insults about our farts.

We were both silent again for a moment.

Spice was right. The cows in the front of line did act like thought

they were better than us. I chose to ignore their behavior. Not everyone

acts right, and I consider the bad behavior of others really to be about

them. Some might say I don’t know my place.

But I was aware something was going on now that made me feel bad.

I was going to address it.

CINNAMON is also available through your local bookstore and library

(just ask them to order it if they don’t have it).
